Nigerian Passport Ranked 57th In The World

The Nigerian passport is ranked 57th in the world out of 199 indexed passports. This is according to Passport Index – the interactive tool recently unveiled by Arton Capital, a financial advisory firm which specialises in procuring multiple citizenships for its clients.

Commenting on the Index, Oluwakemi Ojo – Head of Communications for Travelstart Nigeria – said, “Arton Capital’s assessment bodes well for Nigerians who love to travel. Currently, Nigerian passport holders enjoy visa-free access to 61 countries in the world including Fiji, Dominican Republic, Madagascar, Mauritius, and Kenya. Visa-free travel is extremely important because it facilitates doing business in foreign territories, and for leisure travellers it reduces the costs and administrative hassles of international travel.”

In West Africa, Guinea has a leg up on the rest of the sub-region. The second most useful passport in the region belongs to Togo whose bearers can travel to a total of 67 countries without having to apply for a visa. Citizens of Sao Tome & Principles are less fortunate with visa-free access to just 28 countries.

The Passport Index filters passports by country, by region, by colour (of the passport cover), and by passport power rank – the ranking system allocates 1 point for each country the passport holder can enter without applying for a visa before departure.

The United Kingdom and United States share the highest passport power rank in the index with access to 147 countries, while Palestinian Territories, Myanmar among others have the lowest with visa free access to just 28 countries. Nigeria holds the same rank on the passport ranking as with Tunisia, Zambia, Mali, Namibia, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Tanzania and Bahrain.

The Index’s visa-free count is based on data and consultations from IATA’s Timaticweb platform and other sources. Passports are ranked based on their Visa Free Score. The higher the Visa Free Score, the better the Passport Power Rank.

The country list is based on the 193 UN member countries and 6 territories (Macao, Kosovo, etc.) for a total of 199. Territories annexed to other countries such as Norfolk Island, French Polynesia, etc. are excluded. Data is based on research from publicly available sources, as well as information shared by government agencies.

Naira Now N230 To $1

The naira, which had fallen sharply in the parallel market, staged a major recovery thursday, as it appreciated to a band of N225 to N230 to a dollar, compared to N240 to the dollar at which it sold in the last few weeks.

Forex dealers attributed the naira’s gain to excess supply of the greenback in the market, even as it looked like a lot of speculators would lose their shirts.

THISDAY gathered from a reliable source that commercial banks that presently have dollars in excess of $1 billion in their vaults have started taking desperate measures to mitigate currency risk.

In fact, the source, a bureau de change (BDC) operator, disclosed that banks have stopped accepting dollars because they have too much cash in their vaults.

According to the source, as a result of the development, banks have been rejecting dollar deposits into domiciliary accounts, but customers are allowed to withdraw cash from their accounts.

“The reason the banks have too much cash is due to speculation and money laundering. A lot of people have been speculating against the naira and amassed so much cash. Then there are those who have been amassing dollars obtained illicitly and want to launder the money,

“So bank vaults are awash with dollars, largely driven by speculation and money laundering. The banks made it very clear that they want to get rid of the dollars in the system, so if you want to withdraw you can, but you cannot pay in dollars into your domiciliary account,” the source explained.

Confirming the development, an official of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said the banks even offered the dollars to the central bank and sought its assistance to help them to wire the funds overseas, which the CBN rejected.

Following the rejection, the banks were left with no option than to stop accepting dollar deposits from customers, hence the sharp depreciation of the dollar to the naira in the informal forex market.

“By the time CBN refused to wire the cash abroad, the banks led by Stanbic IBTC stopped accepting cash from their customers. Stanbic IBTC sent an email two days ago to its customers that it would not accept dollar deposits for the time being and this was followed by ten other banks,” he divulged.

He said the situation was compounded by CBN’s insistence that BDCs obtain the Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) of their customers before transacting any business with them.

“The central bank introduced this measure so that it can track the wire transfer BDCs carry out on behalf of their customers. That way, a money trail can be established to ensure that the funds being wired out are for legitimate transactions and not illicit transfers.

“Another option available to the CBN is to give BDCs prepaid debit cards in denominations of $1,000 instead of selling them cash so that these cards could be used for legitimate transactions that are traceable,” the official explained.

Also, an analyst at Ecobank Nigeria, Mr. Kunle Ezun, who spoke to THISDAY, attributed the naira’s surge to the directive by the central bank that all licensed BDCs in the country must provide the BVNs of their customers for all transactions.

“I have been watching the market in the past few days and since last week’s directive by the central bank for the inclusion of BVNs as one of the requirements for accessing the interbank market, the naira has been appreciating.

“As the enforcement of the BVN commences next week, I think we would see more transparency in that market. I have always said that what is driving the parallel market is speculation and that is what the CBN has always said.

“So once the BDCs start complying with the BVN requirement, we might see the naira appreciate further in the parallel market,” Ezun said in a phone chat with THISDAY last night.

The CBN about a fortnight ago also directed the BDCs to provide the BVN of all their directors before August 15, as failure may affect their continued participation in the forex market.

Ooni Of Ife Is Still Very Much Alive, Chiefs Tell Governor

Members of Ife Royal Traditional Council (RTC) who visited the Governor of Osun State, Governor Rauf Aregbesola today has told the Governor that the Ooni of Ife is still very much alive, hale and healthy. They told the Governor that it is such a shame that it is only negative rumours that are always being spread about the Oba and if at all he has died they would be the first to know and make the news public. Others who were also at the meeting while they were giving the governor an update about the Oba were also top officials of the Osun State Government. Below is what the traditional chiefs told the state governor.

"we were all shocked when we heard the rumour. If at all such an incident had occurred, the traditional council would be the first to know and equally break the news to the entire public.
"Sixteen of us are his chiefs and when he was travelling out, he didn't look like he was going to die and should that have happened to him, we would have been informed even before anyone would hear about it. We pray that Ooni Sijuade will live long in good health."

Responding, Governor Aregbesola commended the chiefs for holding forth while Oba Sijade was away, just as he prayed for sound health and long life for the monarch.

PHOTOS: Nollywood Actors Visit Governor Mimiko

The wait has ended. So have the guesses. This year, the Best of Nollywood Awards holds December 12th in Akure, Ondo State. The governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, made this announcement Thursday morning at a meeting with the organisers of BON and select Nollywood stars inside his stately country home in Ondo town, Ondo State. “On behalf of the good people of Ondo State and me, we are set to host the Best of Nollywood Awards this year. We will give spirit and soul to the awards ceremony because it would be held in the best and only international events centre in Nigeria. Our new Dome would make the Expo Centre in Lagos look like a village kitchen,” he said.

Adducing reasons for consenting to host BON Awards, Governor Mimiko said, “My first reaction when the executive producer mentioned hosting BON Awards to me was that these are not the best of times for any state financially but he assured me that it would not cost the state so much. And I agreed essentially because growing up, we were all victims of cultural imperialism by the West. Of course, at that time, we still had contending views of the East because of the deep rooted culture in their (Indian and Chinese) films.” As time went by however, he said the Nigerian film began to show great promises.
Though a successful medical doctor before political adventurism took over, Dr Mimiko’s robust knowledge of the global film industry was not in doubt; which was why he said if there is one area Nigeria has shown the world that she is capable of excelling especially in the last two decades, it is in the creative industry especially the film industry. “So, for me, the celebration of Nollywood is within the context of the cultural, if you like, imperialistic possibilities of Nigeria and why not? So long we talk about our potentials; we could also make Nigerian films a global commodity. If we want to be a dominant country in Africa and a global player, we need to deliberately create our Nollywood narrative by creating a theme around which other sub-themes would be created to sell our country,” he posited.
This is because, he continued, “Even in Hollywood, there is a constant narrative, whether subtle or otherwise, in all their cinematic outputs. We have to discover our own narrative. It is amazing the possibilities therein. There is no home in Africa where Nollywood is not celebrated and I think this creates finite possibilities for us to recreate and identify ourselves before the world. For us, celebrating Nollywood stars is part of our patriotic drive to ensure that this industry actually helps to actualize the Nigerian dream. I don’t think there is any nation that has a product and does not package how to sell it.”
The executive producer, Seun Oloketuyi, thanked the governor for his understanding, love and support for the entertainment industry, and importantly, for agreeing to host the event. Oloketuyi further expressed his appreciation to Governor Mimiko. While urging other governors to take a cue from Governor Mimiko and help the industry grow, Oloketuyi presented him a certificate to symbolize the hosting right. Present at the event were Nollywood stars like Segun Arinze, Yomi Fash Lanso, Fathia Balogun, Ngozi Nwosu, Alex Ekubo, Ebube Nwagbo, Toyosi Adesanya and Amanda Ebeye among others.

On being in a relationship

On the bag controversy
It happened a few months ago I just kept having somebody bugging me to patronize her .Personally I do not shop for myself.I have people who do all that.So I kept telling her I do not shop for myself,i don't even do that in Nigeria.
It was my little friend's birthday coming up and I had a similar bag,so I said ok, could you give me a bag and box that matches with that ?
I had not been in the country for almost two months, when it arrived .By the time I came to Nigeria,I looked at it.I mean, even if I had never used a designer before,I would know that was fake ..
The bag was like $3000 because that was what she sent with the picture.I think they tend to send you the original copy of what ever it is.So that is what I got and I said I didn't like it because it was fake and I couldn't give that out as a gift.
On how she resolved it, she said
I actually burnt the box ..Yes I burnt the box ..I couldn't keep the box because I didn't want it to be said that I kept it and was going to use it at some point
On why she didn't just return it
I was going to give her but it was with my housekeeper for two months, waiting got her to take it.And when the instagram thing came out the next thing she sent me was a very insulting text message .
On why she is always accused of owing for items bought (It was the second time)
I'm an easy target. It is very easy.

On how she makes money considering she hasn't featured in a movie in two years
I have worked so hard.I get contracts.I will not tell you everything I do.Must you know what I do? I do alot of business.I am an engineer.I have a life outside entertainment ..

I was coming at Tyga,not Kylie-Amber Rose

Amber Rose has responded to Khloe Kardashian's Complex magazine interview in which the reality star addressed their twitter feud ..

Speaking to Perez Hilton,Amber said she has no issues with Kylie, but Tyga as she was standing up for her friend, Blac Chyna
"I feel like everything was extremely misunderstood. Listen, I met Kylie before, she was actually a really sweet girl, I was very surprised as to how nice she was to me,And I wasn't coming at Kylie. I was coming at Tyga on behalf of my best friend, Blac Chyna."
"So, for me to say, 'Yeah, she should probably go to bed,' maybe was in poor taste and I understand that," "But I feel like that should have been more of a phone call that Khloé could've had with me. She could've called me. We run in the same circles. She could've gotten my number for sure."
But that's her sister, so I understand where she was coming from, and I feel like it escalated to the point where it shouldn't have gotten that far," I always thought Khloé was cool. I never really, like, met her but I always felt like she had a bunch of personality and she was like a really cool girl. Kylie, like I said, was very nice to me. So it really wasn't about them. It just kind of turned into that and, via social media, it just made everything a lot worse."
Amber went as far as to invite Khloé, Kylie and the rest of the sisters to her "Slut Walk" in October to put all the bad blood behind them.
"I want to just end all—it's hard for me to be a feminist and still have those loose ends. I really don't want argue with those girls. It's not that serious to me,

PDP officials squandered N12bn in 9 months –Workers

Angry workers of the Peoples Democratic Party have accused the members of the National Working Committee of the party of squandering N12bn in nine months.
The workers claim that N11bn was realised from the sale of nomination forms while N1bn was gotten from the sale of delegates forms.

They alleged that the money was squandered shortly after the sale of the forms began on October 27, 2014 till date.
The workers said this in their response to the letter sent to them by the party’s National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo, on Wednesday.

Oladipo, in the letter, informed workers about the decision of the NWC to reduce the party’s workforce by 50% and to also cut the salaries of those to be retained by the same percentage.

The national secretary of the party said the decision, among others, would take effect from August. He said:
“Establishment staff who would remain are required to obtain individual letters of revalidation from their state chapters within one month of this circular to their suitability for service at the national secretariat.”
However, after a meeting in Abuja on Thursday, the workers sent a reply to Oladipo yesterday titled, “Re: Organisation and Restructuring of staff at the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party.” They sent copies of the letter, which was exclusively obtained by Punch, to former President Goodluck Jonathan and the acting Chairman, Board of Trustees of the party, Alhaji Haliru Bello.

Copies were also sent to the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, PDP caucuses in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, Chairman, PDP Governors’ Forum, Dr. Segun Mimiko and all the PDP governors.
Besides querying how the N11bn was spent, the workers also said they were aware that the party realised another N1bn in sales of delegates forms recently. With this, the angry workers wondered how the party that was in power could be in a financial crisis.

Their letter to Oladipo read in part,
“While we appreciate the fact that the party is no longer in power, we are equally aware that the party realised over eleven billion naira (N11,000,000,000) in income from the sale of nomination and expression of interest forms in the last quarter of 2014.
“We are equally aware that the NWC collected over a billion naira from the sale of delegate forms via a company account called Morufi Nig. Ltd, Zenith Bank Account N0:1014041654. “With this healthy bank balance, we find it strange that after just two months of handing over power, the NWC is proposing a 50% reduction in staff emoluments.”
“We have also observed from publications in the media that the NWC shared outrageous largesse among themselves immediately after the party’s loss in the last general elections. “We are appalled by the whimsical and derisory nature of the circular which unfortunately negates all known administrative procedures. We wish to recall that the national secretary, who is statutorily in charge of the administration of the secretariat, has never called for a staff meeting or held any interactive session with the staff since his privileged appointment.
“We wish to draw the national secretary’s attention to the fact that there are administrative procedures for the disengagement of staff whose appointments have been duly confirmed.”
The workers said they welcomed the decision of the NWC members to reduce their personal staff and also reduce their emoluments. But they said they rejected “the directives for staff members to get revalidation letters from the state chapters as this act will amount to accepting our unlawful disengagement from service.
“We reject in totality the proposal to reduce staff emolument by 50%. This is because unlike the members of the NWC, the staff are solely dependent on their salaries and allowances.”
They said they still have unwavering belief in the possibility of the party bouncing back, and, therefore, urged the NWC to have the same faith. The workers reminded the NWC members that the establishment staff of the PDP national secretariat were engaged on the basis of a well-articulated establishment manual that expressly stated the conditions of service therein.

Woman stabs robber to death in Lagos in self defence

A middle-aged woman is currently recuperating in a Lagos hospital, after robbers stormed her rented apartment on the Lagos Island, during which she stabbed one of the assailants to death.

It was learnt that the woman, identified simply as Adenike, and her family were attacked on Tuesday at about 2am on Eyin Iga Street. It was gathered that the robbers, who were armed with knives and cutlasses, reportedly gained entrance into the house after damaging the gates.

It was also learnt that when the robbers got to Adenike’s apartment, a struggle ensued between Adenike and one of the robbers, identified as Quadri Iginla, who cut her with a knife. Adenike was said to have wrenched the knife from Iginla, and stabbed him in the stomach.

The robbery suspect reportedly lost balance and fell off from the two-storey building. Neighbours, who learnt of the robbery, were said to have alerted the police at the Adeniji Adele Division.

The other suspected robbers reportedly escaped after the police got to the area. The policemen were said to have rushed Iginla, who was unconscious, to the Lagos Island General Hospital, while Adenike was also taken by her family to a private hospital.

Unfortunately,  Iginla died in the hospital.

Adenike’s husband, who declined to give his name, said the robbers injured his wife.
He said,
“We cannot confirm the number of the robbers. They entered my apartment at about 2am. One of them injured my wife in the hand and there was a struggle. As this went on, other people called the police and a patrol van was sent to our street. “The robbers quickly fled from the house. One of them, who had sustained a knife injury, fell off the staircases. The policemen took him to a hospital for treatment.”
A police source said that Iginla was not attended to at the general hospital for lack of a vacant bed.

He added that the robbery suspect died at a health center on the Adeniji Adele Road.

He said:
“The police patrol team responded to a distress call on the street at about 2.30am. A male robbery suspect, Iginla, was found injured. The suspect and others, who are still at large, allegedly entered Adenike’s room. While making away with possessions, the woman overpowered one of them, and stabbed him in the stomach. “She was also injured in the hand. During the struggle, others escaped, but the robber fell off the building. The police took the suspect and the victim to the hospital.”
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Iginla’s girlfriend showed up at the police station, and wanted to know where he was being treated.
He said,
“No one in the area knew the identity of the robber. His girlfriend showed up at the station, and was asking the police to let her stay with him, but they did not allow her.”

The knife has since been recovered, while the case had been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation.
